We are currently working with a primary school in Walsall who are seeking a passionate and committed SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their Enhanced Learning Provision. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment, where you’ll play a key role in supporting children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Role Overview:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with our class teachers and the special educational needs team to provide tailored support to children who experience challenges with social, emotional, and mental health. You will help to create a nurturing, safe, and engaging learning environment that enables children to succeed and develop their skills both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
- Assist in the delivery of individualised education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies.
- Work with the class teacher to implement differentiated activities and interventions.
- Support the emotional well-being of students, promoting positive behaviour and self-regulation.
- Help foster positive relationships with students, encouraging their engagement and motivation.
- Assist in the preparation of classroom resources and learning materials.
- Support the creation of a safe and inclusive classroom environment for all students.
- Work collaboratively with parents, carers, and external professionals to support the needs of the students.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Experience of working with children.
- A strong understanding of SEMH and how it impacts children’s learning and behaviour.
- The ability to build positive relationships with children and provide emotional support.
- Good communication skills, both with children and staff members.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and remain calm in challenging situations.
- A compassionate and patient nature, with a passion for helping children reach their full potential.
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., Teaching Assistant qualification, GCSEs, or equivalent) would be an advantage.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience working with children with additional learning needs, particularly SEMH.
- Training in behaviour management strategies or de-escalation techniques.
- An understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies.
