CERT Solutions are working in partnership with a large secondary school in Birmingham who require a full-time SENCO

About the role

The role is a full time position with a view of being perm for the right candidate. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that students with special educational needs (SEN) receive the support they need to succeed in school. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and Supporting SEN Pupils
  • Developing and Implementing SEN Policies
  • Ensuring the school complies with SEN regulations and policies
  • Creating and updating SEN support plans (such as EHCPs in the UK)
  • Advising teachers on strategies to support SEN pupils
  • Organizing training and professional development
  • Communicating with parents about their child’s needs and progress
  • Collaborating with external specialists (e.g., educational psychologists, speech therapists)
  • Tracking the progress of SEN students
  • Adjusting support plans based on student development

A Bit about the school:

The school is a large secondary based in the North side of Birmingham near Perry Barr. They are rated Good by Ofsted and have great transport links as well as onsite parking.

Pay:

Paid in line with a perm member of staff depending on experience £35,000 – £40,000 (£180 – £200 per day)

Requirements:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • You must be a qualified teacher to become a SENCO.
  • This means completing Initial Teacher Training (ITT), such as:
  • A Bachelor of Education (BEd)
  • A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • A School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) program

Experience in Teaching

  • Schools prefer candidates with at least a few years of teaching experience.
  • Experience in working with SEN students is highly beneficial.

National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO)

  • This is a mandatory qualification for all new SENCOs in mainstream schools.
  • It must be completed within 3 years of starting the role.
  • The course covers SEN law, inclusive teaching, and leadership skills.

Strong Knowledge of SEN Policies and Support Strategies

  • Understanding Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Knowledge of SEND Code of Practice (2015) and relevant legislation.
